Xylitol and aural health

If you chew gum, you have probably seen “xylitol” listed as an ingredient in many brands.

Xylitol is a low-calorie natural alternative sweetener that is common in American-made sweets and is even more common in candies from Europe and Asia. Its well-known benefits include cavity prevention and it is also known to be safe for diabetics to eat. Much of its popularity is also due to its lack of toxicity to humans- it does not have the same risks as artificial sweeteners such as aspartame.

But did you know that it also benefits aural health?

In addition to the benefits derived from chewing gum (clearing of earwax), xylitol also functions as a virtual antibiotic, fighting the bacteria that can infect and damage your ears.

So, next time you buy gum or candy, look for xylitol in the ingredients. It is more than just a safer, less unhealthy alternative to sugar- xylitol can actually improve the health of your ears.
